Ever avoid certain people because they scared you until you met one and really liked him/her? What scared you?

I avoided folks with tattoos. Thought they were rough and tough and scary. Until I met a guy who painted my apartment which took 3 days who covered with tats everywhere the clothing wasn't except his face. I was on vacation so I was around while he was there and we got to talking. He was a retired Marine (so was my dad). His taste in music (jazz and classical) and literature (science fiction) mirrored mine and we were off and running! That was the first day.The second and 3rd days day I made him and his helper lunch. By the time he was done on that third day I was sad to see him go.  I hugged him and thanked him for the excellent job he did and also for the enjoyable conversation. I know it's a silly thing but it was big to me and I was so embarrassed and ashamed of how I felt when I was ignorant and how very wrong I had been.  Knowledge is a wonderful thing. Isn't it?

Tattoos are a very big thing these days.  I don't have any myself, but all my sisters and half of my nieces have them.  In fact, one of my nephews is a tattoo artist and he's very good.

I used to think that anyone who belonged to a motorcycle "gang" was a criminal, but there are so many clubs these days that also help raise money for charities and help military veterans that my opinion of them has changed considerably.  Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't date someone who belonged to Hell's Angels, but there are a lot of other groups whose members are doctors, attorneys and other professionals.

I agree that the tattoos of today are real pieces of artwork.  If I was younger, I probably would be getting some myself.  I never did and will likely stay that way.  But many really attractive people have them.

I too always had an image of motorcycle gangs.  My perspective hasn't changed with the ones that condone violence and abuse alcohol and drugs.  But there are lots of people that simply like their motorcycles that live a very upstanding lifestyle.

Absolutely agree with you.  For me, a tattoo would have to have some real significance.  At present, there isn't anything in my life that fits the description.  Also, placement is key.  If I had done a tattoo on various parts of my body when I was young, you would be hard pressed to identify what they are at this stage of my life. :)

Exactly Spunky. You know after the first day I didn't even notice the tats. I paid attention to him and what he said. It was a revelation to me and from that day on I admire the tats. Lots of folks have them. Gals who work cash registers at the market, folks in waiting rooms of medical offices, folks you pass on the street. I would never get one because I'm a chicken about pain and I'm pretty sure it hurts a little when a needle goes into your arm. Our former daughter-in-law had a sweet little butterfly tat on her ankle. I saw a gal with what looked like a bracelet which was a tat with the names of her children around her wrist delicately laced with flowers. There is great art there. I also never got my ears pierced.  Scairdy cat!  It was a life-changing experience and it came late in life. I think I was over 50! Imagine all those years being oh-so-wrong? I know. Some folks are real slow learners and I'm one of 'em. At least about that. Thank you for your reply and Happy Thursday! :) This post was edited by RosieG at January 11, 2018 9:27 AM MST

Some of the tats are gorgeous.  I had my ears pierced when I was 13.  It hurt a bit, but was definitely worth it.

I sat behind a classmate in 11th grade. Her name was Janet and she had had her ears pieced. They were green. I assumed the green was pus. That turned me off totally forever. When I see tiny babies with pierced ears I wince. Different strokes I guess Spunky! The most beautiful earrings are definitely for pierced ears. My ear lobes as rather small so the regular earrings always were a problem for me. I didn't care. There was no way in he** I'd get my ears pierced. I still see that stomach-churning vision in my mind's eye Spunky.  I graduated in  1954 so that was in 1953! 65 years later! Some mental pictures never go away. That is one of them! Thank you for your reply! :)

I had an infection in one of my earlobes, but it went away quickly.  However, because of it, I never would get more than the one hole I have in each lobe.  I can understand recalling that girl after all these years.  Some things can't be unseen!

I think we all have our prejudices somewhere deep inside.  I can't think off hand what type of people have ever scared me, but I am sure I had initial reactions to some that were merely based on appearance.

Surfaces/exteriors/packaging does not indicate what's inside. I KNOW that from past experience with people. But until I met a super fine guy covered with tats and got to know him a little I was affected by it anyway. Not any longer. Thank you for your reply PeaPod and Happy Thursday! :)

    People behind bars scare me.

Not all of them are criminals but most of them are in there because they don't think.

I am scared of people like that.

Remember excon on Answerbag Sharon? He used that name because he was jailed for smoking pot. We got to be really good friends. He was guilty of it but a nicer guy you couldn't meet. I mean now pot is legalized in many states but illegal in the eyes of the feds. It's a mess. The use of it mitigates pain for folks with AIDS or cancer. I don't see any problem with recreational use just as I don't see a problem with the use of alcohol PROVIDING folks know their limit. I mean I'm not even sure what that means with regard to pot. With alcohol I know my limit and I'm never tempted to exceed i t. That would be 2 drinks. After that color me disinterested in having more. I'm not sure if pot smokers can be chain smokers like regular cigarette smokers can be. My dad smoked 3 packages of cigarettes a day. The equivalent amount of pot would do what? I think I'm gonna ask. Thank you for your reply and Happy Thursday! :)
