Flags or banners with a blue star were first flown by families in WW1. The number of stars represented every immediate family member serving in combat. If someone died the blue star was replaced with a GOLD STAR.
In 1947 Congress approved the use of the GOLD STAR lapel button. They may be worn only by immediate family members of the fallen. So they are a long tradition in the American military. And usually revered, honored and appreciated by Americans who understand the significance of them.
