Back in the day slaves could be bought/sold/owned. They weren't people. They were possessions. Today people sell themselves. Slaves, right?
If the price is right. The person who sells himself/herself to the highest bidder is perforce a SLAVE and is owned by that person. Now that doesn't appeal to me but it must appeal to lotsa folks.
