It makes no sense to elect people to uphold laws they themselves break. Yet we continue to do it. What is wrong with us?

But justices/judges are mostly appointed rather than elected.  And let's face it - who is able to always obey every law all the time?  There are just too many that most of us know nothing about. So either you have some kind of a justice system based upon laws - as imperfect as it might be - or just chaos - everybody doing only what is right for them.
