No, it was the refusal of the British Parliament to allow Colonial representation in that body, yet, they could enact and collect a number of unpopular taxes on the colonists that had no voice in government. When you consider what you're receiving for your investment by way of taxes, it certainly is a pitiful return whether evil or not.
That is an oversimplification. There were taxes on other things as well. And the tea was being brought in and basically dumped on the colonies cheaply to affect an attempted end to the boycott of English goods by many people. So was symbolic as well. And don't forget as well they were starting to bring English bishops in and trying to set them over American more democratic churches.
But please understand. We work hard for what we can call our own and we want to enjoy the fruits of our labors. We pay to have a government, we pay to have some of what are termed "internal improvements". But then it gets to be that any project any politician can get through has to be funded with our tax money so more and more is taken from us and less and less we have to enjoy. Now we have our money taken from us (which amounts to legal robbery) to support people unable or unwilling to work themselves AND to support illegal immigrants to come into the country to vote against us. Which is just absurd. And people do not appreciate what is taken from us by taxes but instead get an arrogant attitude like OK what we have earned is actually THEIRS and not OURS at all! Some people are obliged to hand over a THIRD of their income OR MORE to the government every year. And mostly for wild-eyed hair-brained schemes to get votes against us! What ever happened to charity and "good works"? Answer: they are all now hardened into laws and we are discouraged from exercising them.
