I wonder why some remarkably talented people didn't seem to respect their talent? Did they think they didn't deserve it?

They abused it and themselves and for some reason didn't value it. I'm thinking of the ones who died of drugs or alcohol or other self-imposed excesses . They destroyed themselves. Is there a why common to all of them?
