The two ex-wives are Mormon and went to their Bishops for help when they were beaten. They were counseled to "hang in there". WHY?

I expect the Catholic Church (they frown bigly and look down upon divorce) would counsel the very same thing. "Hang in there. Accept the beatings. Maybe things will get better." What kind of world is it that does this to human beings? What kind of people can give such counsel and not be revolted and disgusted by themselves? What kind of people accept that and follow their advice and stay and keep getting beaten? I think many people are batsh** crazy. We just don't want to admit it. Every once in awhile the ugliness spills over into our consciousness and we are forced to see what lies beneath. And it is tragic. :(

It is a misunderstanding of the Bible. The Bible does say God hates divorce but God loves us all and would not have anyone stay in an abusive relationship. A husband is to treat his wife as Christ treats the church and to love his wife as he loves himself. Abuse is not allowed in that.
Also a slave (intended servant) that is abused is to be freed because of the abuse, is not a wife above a slave? Of couse she is.
