The joy is in the doing if you really love what you do. How it is received by others is irrelevant to you. Isn't it?

If you limit yourself to doing/saying what pleases others how authentic can you ever be? Aren't you merely a reflection of them? How satisfying can that possibly be if you never get to know whom you could have been/become?
