Does anything ever stand alone on its own or is EVERYTHING ALWAYS CONTINGENT ON SOMETHING ELSE? Why?

The only thing I can think of is the 1kg platinum-iridium mass to which all other masses are compared. It is rarely displayed or used to compare others. It is the only SI unit that uses an actual object as a standard. That will change this coming November as a new standard has been derived. This is a computer generated picture. The actual one is not on display or ever touched.

Has it NEVER been on display at any time Ele? How do you know that it isn't apocryphal? I can understand not touching it but not even ever seeing it? Why would that be a necessity? I ask these questions because I have never heard of it so my ignorance is massive. Thank you for your reply and for making the effort to find a standalone something! I appreciate it! :)

It has bee used periodically to calibrate secondary standards in use throughout the world. The entire explanation is quite complex so here is my reference:

Apologies to John Donne, correctamundo? Do you believe that donjohn weighs just 239? I bet he is 270 if he's an ounce. Why does he come to mind you ask? Have you seen his belly recently? He tries to hide it but it precedes him by a significant amount. This floating stomach reminded of him. Thank you for the cute graphic Ele. I know John Donne (whom I believe became a priest after having been a nonbeliever) is probably chuckling somewhere in spacetime! :) OH MY GOSH Ele.  Donjohn. John Donne. Tell me that doesn't creep you out? This post was edited by RosieG at February 27, 2018 9:38 AM MST

What is that in pounds? You never heard of John Donne  till moi? Did you not take any literature or Masterpieces of Literature classes in college? You are not a fan of poetry? Huh. Okey dokey.  I mean For Whom the Bell Tolls is a famous novel and a movie too. Everyone surely has heard "no man is an island" or "never send to know for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee"? That's kinda hard for me to believe BUT I never took a class in chemistry or physics either which is maybe equally hard for you to believe so maybe it balances out!  Thank you for your reply Ele! :) This post was edited by RosieG at February 27, 2018 11:04 AM MST
