Wisdom of crowds. Law of large numbers. Probability. Predictabiliy. Representative sample. Margin of error. Meaningful?

A "representative sample" is not the same everywhere every time. It varies. According to whom and why? How do you KNOW the sample you choose is of sufficient size to provide results that are useful? Does margin of error vary in direct proportion to the size of the "representative" sample?  Anyone know? Or are all those stats pulled out of the air or out of a hat or out of the derriere?
