The voracious desire for approval of the needy clearly shows lack of self-esteem, self-confidence or self acceptance. They can't give it to themselves so they beg for it/demand it from others. Whatever happened at the moment of the coupling of the egg and sperm must be the source of it. What else could it be but some defect in the development of personality/character in the womb?
