In America if folks have names they dislike they just choose another one. Do folks in other countries do that too?

Is that just another American trait? As long as the name change isn't for the purpose of deceiving or hiding an identify I think it's quite legal. You can go through the courts and do it officially or just use the name. Some authors use pseudonyms. Actors/actresses do it all the time. Would you change your name for any reason other than marriage? Why?
