As a child, a hard bed in a cold room with insufficient blankets. As a teenager, boarding school, a 40-bed dormitory with no windows and snow in winter and spring. As an art student, first, a shared single bed with sagging chainlinks, then a warehouse with a room formed from plastic. For 20 years as a sculptor and art teacher living in an old wool-warehouse, things were better for while, because I made what I needed.
Here now, on this farm, by western standards it's not much at all, just a very small demountable shack. It's far from what I would like - a comfortable bed, a higher ceiling, more interior space, a private room of my own. But it is what we can afford with no debt, and that freedom from financial stress is worth it.
