Could you possibly be rivals and friends with someone or does being a rival make that impossible? Why?

Venus and Serena Williams have managed it very well. Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer get along just great off the court. Does it take a great person to be able to do that or just someone who is normal reasonable sensible professional?
