In a way, no.  Although it was a tragedy, at least they bonded.  It's amazing at what brings people together - joys, sorrows, tragedies, pleasures...
Too often we let things such as, religion, politics, nationality, skin color, age, gender, (and so forth) get in the way of our getting to know other people.  How many more friendships could be made if people didn't let petty things come between them?   If we were to actually sit down and look at it, we'd find we have more in common with others than we have differences with them.  Everyone has struggles (some more than others).  Everyone has confrontations with death in their life (parent, sibling, spouse, friend, pet).  It's at these low points in life that we most need others.  If we've gone through a struggle in our life we can sympathize with another who's currently going through that struggle.

Strange as it may seem, bonds made over tragedies can be stronger than those made over happy things.  Facing the same struggles as another person somehow makes us feel closer to them.

Precisely! You can dearly love someone with whom you may disagree on a variety of things. I think that's being human. Except in politics. It is not allowed there. You must agree on everything all the time. You must all support the exact same things all the time. You must hate and vilify the exact same people and things all the time. No exception. You may note  the haters and attackers are still going strong during this time of national mourning. Vilifying the mourners and McCain and the media for covering it. Belittling/minimizing/criticizing the emotion which underlies it. A pox on their houses!. Shame on them! For once if they have nothing good to say about a fallen hero they they should say nothing. But no. They must still keep up the fight on the behalf of their monstrous leader. I am continually shocked at the depths of evil that exist in some people and that they don't mind showing it. Thank you for your thoughtful reply Shuhak and Happy Friday. :) This post was edited by RosieG at August 31, 2018 8:32 AM MDT

Their friendship goes back 20 years, so I think they bonded over more than just the tragedies.  I think what is most amazing about McCain is that he was willing to extend a hand across the aisle to meet half way.  He seemed more interested in reaching a solution to a problem than just digging in his heels.  He seemed to have many friends on the Democrat side and I do believe that he was an honorable man who loved his country above all else.

If you heard Joe Biden's eulogy L here's what he said that was so shocking. He and Senator McCain often sat together in the Senate. He'd go over to McCain and sit or McCain would come over to where Biden was and sit. Each of them was chastised/criticized for doing that by their party leaders. Because it "didn't look good" or some other cockamamie stupid dumb reason. They couldn't believe it! What that says about the mentality of some of those pols is not good. They had each other's backs. They argued politically but personally they clicked bigly and loved each other. I think that is a very human thing. What is going on now in politics is inhuman in my opinion. Thank you for your thoughtful reply m'dear!  :) This post was edited by RosieG at August 31, 2018 9:15 AM MDT

McCain realized that the country couldn't move forward without compromise.  Politics doesn't have to be an us vs. them daily struggle to get good legislation passed,  In fact, in one of his last speeches, he said they are getting nothing done.  Happy Friday. :)
