The war in Afghanistan. 17 years and counting. Are we going for another 100 years' war? Why not, right? What are wars for?

Wars are to make history.

A high school history teacher once said, "the US isn't "happy" unless its involved in a war".

At the time those words seemed strange to me.  How could any country "enjoy" war?  However, as I look at the list of wars this country's been in since its foundation, that teacher may have been right.  This country does seem to get "restless" in peacetime.  We've started wars by invading other countries to overthrow their government and establish our own ("democracy")... which sometimes has resulted in catastrophic consequences.  We've aided other countries in their civil wars... sometimes backing the "wrong" side.  We'll even fight with ourselves.
The US is a restless country, but it's also rather arrogant.  The US can't seem to sit still, it always has to be "doing something".  At the same time it has a tendency to think that its way is not only the right way, but that it's the only way.  We've even taken up the position of being "world police" just so we have an excuse to start or join in wars.  One could almost say that for the US not be involved in a war is ... unamerican.

You read the question and answered it thoughtfully and knowledgeably and now I know what I've been feeling  more and more of late is true. We are not great.  We are not a good example/role model. We are NOT EXCEPTIONAL in the best sense of the word. We are warmongers. "Either provide us with a reason declare war or we will manufacture a reason to attack. Your choice." Hawks are everywhere. Doves are frowned upon and eliminated. When has a dove ever survived a hawk attack? I shall ask. Thank you for your exceptional (in the best sense of the word) reply Shuhak.
