Discussion»Statements»Rosie's Corner» Sad to see Sears belly up. Was part of my childhood. They sold everything! Clothes/toys/tools/appliances/housewares/tires! What do you miss?
We were shopping at the store in the Burlington Mall until it closed last year. All our appliances we bought there. Yes I miss so much of what I once took for granted. Filene's and Jordan Marsh were stores where I shopped. Cronin's. Record stores and bookstores, malls which before the internet were booming, streets that were not redone as obstacle courses , empty lots and fields to play in.

I lived in East Acton for 5 years. My son was born at Emerson Hospital in West Concord. He and I regularly went to the Burlington Mall and would eat at an oriental restaurant there. Much before your time I'm sure. My son was born in 1966 and we left Massachusetts to return to California in January 1970. Small world. I shopped at Filene's and Jordan Marsh. Different years than you to be sure. I loved the roadside stands that sold pressed cider and apples and cheeses in the autumn. There was an Italian Bakery that made a rum cake to die for. I think it was in Boston. My Italian friend Nancy took me there. In the summer there was a back road we'd take to I forget where and there the FUDGE MAN sold his candy. Not kidding. He sold chocolate fudge with and without nuts, divinity, peanut butter fudge and penuche. But only in the summer time. We spent 4th of July once on the Charles River across the river from the outdoor theater where the Boston Pops played every year to celebrate the holiday. I didn't like the bug spraying in the summer or salting the icy roads in the winter which caused rust in the undercarriage of the cars. I also didn't like the black ice or the n'or easters. My son was born during one. But I loved the people and the history and the beauty. We lived a couple of miles from Walden Pond and we'd go there once in awhile with a blanket to sit on the sand because the foliage was spectacular then as reflected in the pond. You'd get a double view. The real thing and the reflection. They have fall foliage tours as you know in New England. You were not allowed to go in the water of course. Memories. Small world. Thank you for your reply og and Happy Halloween Wednesday to thee! :).

Decades ago I had an aunt who had worked for Sears for years until she retired. She worked her way up to be a manager and her retirement package was STUPENDOUS Ele! Big bucks every month. Fully paid insurance for life. She was really retiring in style. I was about 15 which is very long ago so I don't know what subsequent managers got through the years. Thank you for your reply! :)
