Quaint. Antiquated. In the Preamble to the Constitution it talks about "promote the GENERAL welfare". That means everyone. But we the people only care about our individual welfare. Why?

It isn't about "we". It is about " me me me me me me  me. Sink or swim on your own. Pull yourself up by your own bootstraps and leave me alone. Don't expect me to help or care because I won't and I don't.  Don't bother me with your problems. I have problems of my own."

Isn't that the way it is today(mostly) in the USA? How not? Pockets of people who feel otherwise are derided, ridiculed and ignored. Was it always this way and those words in the Preamble were just boilerplate and didn't mean anything?  Aren't words supposed to mean something?
