The question was "IF abortion were illegal should the woman getting an abortion be punished?" Trump not being a politician never had come across that sort of question and answered logically. If you break a law...yes you should be punished, makes sense. He corrected himself the next day saying the Doctor performing the legal abortion is who would be punished.
Why would you punish the father? He would not be the one getting the illegal abortion...not the one breaking the law.
It is currently illegal for a man to try and force a woman to get an abortion so that is not what the question would have been addressing.
