Do you "judge" your 12-year-old self by the standards of whom you are today? Is it fair to judge what once was THE BEST by today's BEST?

The Founding Fathers were revered for years but by today's standards are found wanting. That was whom they were at a different time and place. I dunno about you but it seems to me to be unfair. White wealthy slave owners were considered to be THE BEST at that time. Today not so much although of course there are pockets of racism and bigotry everywhere and always will be wherever rich white racists are the soup du jour and the piece de resistance.

Today's "best" is nothing compared to the so-called "founding fathers".  Nor were they perfect either as you have mentioned.  Every person who is born has to learn it anew or they will face losing it.  Being born in this day and age does NOT mean we are more mature or wiser than those born in the mid 18th Century. If we stop cherishing what they cherished and freedom no longer means anything to us then we will just let it go or sell it for a check from the government.

Slavery, by many people, was always questioned morally.  Many saw it as a way to wealth and thus became dependent upon it.  For them slavery was a means to economy and they could afford to be generous if they so chose. It is the poorer people, who felt more economically threatened by competition from a slave work force or competing with former slaves for jobs,  who were more prone to such bigotry.

I don't even remember my 12-year-old self ... but judging from pictures, he was fond of a deep-red (not quite burgundy) denim jacket.

As to "overreaction" to former "heroes" ... that is to be expected when we are taught these people were so much better than everyone else, then the blinders are pulled off.

Maybe if schools didn't teach such a 1-sided history.

I think "fair unbiased" reporting does not mean the same thing to everyone Walt. The don has so very easily brainwashed his trumpicans into perceiving anything negative about him as being FAKE NEWS it shocks me greatly and very deeply. You see it all the time here on Answermug. Very often you will see just two words in answer to a question I ask about his proclivities activities improprieties duplicities atrocities et al . FAKE NEWS say they and that settles it for them. So how do we ever discuss anything with brainwashed folks? We don't. Discussion is impossible where the mind is ossified petrified trumpified.  Thank you for your reply! :)
