Are manufacturers always trying to improve their products? Do you buy the lie and try the "NEW AND IMPROVED"? A con a scam or true?

Are the improvements strictly to attract more buyers so the manufacturer can charge more for it? Any manufacturers out there who work to IMPROVE a product to BENEFIT those who buy? Or is the motive always selfish?
