How common are unplanned or unexpected alligator encounters in Florida?

    They are never planned or expected.  A lot of the time when there is an encounter the human is doing what they are not supposed to do, such as walking too close to canals, ponds, lakes or worse interacting in some way with the beast.  We have to keep them afraid of us so we are told to never feed them.  When they stop being afraid of us, we are to call the county to come get them for euthanization.  I have twice had one lie across my back door.  I live on a canal.  My neighbor called the state.  The fact that they will come right up to a house indicates they aren't really threatened by us.  They went from endangered to overabundant so now we have open season on them to try to control the population.  I don't know if it's working but there are a lot of them here in South Florida.
