It has to be looked at on an individual basis.

My friend is going through a rough time right now, because of her youngest son.
She raised him and his brother the same, and gave them plenty of leeway.  They didn't have chores, or have to get a job.
The oldest got high grades in school (to the point of being offered a "full ride" college scholarship) and graduated college and got a good job.
The youngest stopped attending school his senior year, steals money from her and his grandparents, and went to live with his abusive father (who he couldn't stand taking a trip with in December) ... because she is "too controlling".  IE: She wakes him up in the morning and asks him to go to school.

I don't understand it ... having grown up having to do chores when I was old enough to do so, and having to either have a job or volunteer 20 hours/week after I turned 17.

I hate to tell you this sweetie but the oldest excelled IN SPITE OF HER and the youngest is the person he is BECAUSE OF HER. She is reaping what she sowed which was unconscionable in my mind. CHILDREN NEED PARAMETERS/borders/limit within which to grow up. It makes them feel more secure to know what is expected of them early on. "They didn't have chores or have to get a job". Well she cast her bread upon the waters and the chicken came home to roost. I know it's a mixed metaphor but it is what it is. She lucked out with the older child who figured it out all on his own. Maybe his intellect drove him or his common sense. I'm sorry but I have no sympathy for her. Of course I don't know her. And now who suffers? The kid she helped screw up. Because she wanted her kids to love her or be their friend? Apologies but I always tell you what I think Walt. Thank you for your reply! :) This post was edited by RosieG at February 8, 2019 10:51 AM MST
