Does eating caviar require the death of the fish or do they lay eggs like chickens do? D'ya know?

    Eating the eggs of the sturgeon or salmon roe means they will not develop into mature fish so yes it is killing them.

    Why would you not know this?

    They squirt eggs out.  That's how fish lay eggs.

    They don't need to die.

    They do kill the fish. They slice it open and remove the eggs. They also sell the fish for meat. 

    There is a no-kill method of harvesting the eggs but it is not used much.
