Aren't all Ambassadorships to foreign countries quid pro quos? They buy the job by being large political campaign donors?

That's their payoff? So if they are huge contributors they go to Paris or Rome or wherever. Makes sense. No one trains to be an Ambassdor. No degree available anywhere in Ambassador. It's plum given out to whales. So?

    Not all ambassadorships are political appointments; some are achieved by being a career foreign service officer.  If you look at the chart in the link, you'll see that many are career officers and there are several positions that are vacant.

    Yes, they do and those are career diplomats who know their way around the different cultures of a country so they don't make foolish mistakes.  Happy Sunday. :)
