Would you pay more to experience pleasure or avoid pain? They are not the same. Is the presence of good better than the absence of bad?

An example: I would love to be able to hit a golf ball and watch it soar into the air and land sweetly on the green. But I can't because of physical things that cause too much pain. Therefore paying to remove the pain may bring back the pleasure. I'm getting surgery.

Is the surgery on your back E? What is the percentage of success of back surgery? I hope the odds of success are heavily weighted on your side m'dear. I think it would be AWESOME if you could get rid of the pain and then be able to "get back in the swing of things". When is the surgery scheduled to occur? Thank you for your real-life example. Happy Thursday! :)

I see the spine doc today and will find out success rates etc. Once that is over and I am better, on to the right shoulder.

Gosh E you surely do have a lot on your plate right now. Well good luck and happy tidings with regard to all of it. Feeling better is the goal and I hope you get there sooner rather than later. Thank you for your reply and Happy Thursday! :)

People spend trillions of dollars annually in an effort to "experience" pleasure.  They spend even more to avoid pain.

Pleasure is fleeting; pain is constant.

Face it, life is filled with pain.  Whether it's physical pain, mental pain, or emotional pain.  In fact, not a day goes by when we don't feel some kind of pain.  We suffer with pain from the time we're born to the time we die.  We spend oodles of money in an effort to avoid or alleviate pain -padding, pillows, braces, pills, creams, elixirs, doctors, surgeons, anesthesiologists, psychiatrists ... the list goes on and on.  Yet no matter how hard we try or how much we spend, pain is always with us.
Pleasure.  Just saying or hearing the word can bring about a slight relaxation inside.  Pleasure means something different to each person.   Whether it's taking a vacation, being wealthy, a new baby, a massage, taking a hot bath, eating a good meal, seeing a friend, playing/watching a game/sport, or just getting a good night's sleep.  We spend a good chunk of our money in the pursuit of pleasure.  Yet, while pleasure is awesome, it's short lived.   Eventually the pleasure ends and we're left with just a memory.  So off we go, seeking to obtain more pleasure.

Some say pleasure is the absence of pain.  Yet some find some types of pain to be pleasurable (I'm not talking about masochists).  They will spend their money to feel pain.  The bottom line is that people will spend their money on whatever makes them happy.

No pleasure comes without pain.  One must work hard to earn the money to go on that pleasurable vacation.  A woman must go through the pains of childbirth before she can have the pleasure of holding her new baby.  One must know the pain of heartache before they can know the pleasure of 'true' love.
