A few days before the beginning of the World Cup (or Football Championship), a French journalist declared : “Football is the new opium of the people”. Do you agree or disagree? Give your reasons. Thank you.
Fine but there are many "opiums". And why shouldn't people do what they enjoy doing? What gives them pleasure. The notion that we should not enjoy ourselves and somehow put all our energies into an academic and non-existent "class struggle" begs the limits of human understanding. And presupposes a particular set of beliefs and understandings most people would reject anyway.
I think men are way worse than women as far as keeping up the pretense.
I hardly call the once a week or month or whatever an addiction. That is what befalls most of the marrieds. Hardly an addiction like cigarettes or gambling or booze or shopping or overeating.
If you gotta have it every day, you are not a typical married man or you have a mistress. Or you are taking care of business yourself.

The French Journalist must be a very young pup. If he was making reference to the quote "Religion is the Opium of the People", he is off base for so many reasons. Do note the church in the EU has been losing attendance for many decades.
The Worldcups have been extremely popular since the late 50's. During the 60's with the rise of Pele and strength of South America there was even more viewership from the stands. With the advent of live Telecasts work stopped during good matches. I remember over 150K people in Maria Threse plataz alone in for the World Cups in '06 watching on Diamond Vision Screens.
So no it it is not the new religion, only a great pastime. That is unless it is premier League and you are a Gunners Fan - that borders on cult like behavior
I don't think people are any more "addicted" to football or any other sports than they used to be. People usually love sports or don't care one way or another.
(Mrs. C, I wrote this before I completely understood the question so I see why you answered as you do...my bad)
I disagree. Everyone is addicted to something. If you are focused on something at the expense of anything else? That is an addiction. I don't care if it is wearing your favorite scarf everyday.
There are tons of Sports nuts out there and there always was and always will be.
