    I guess I could be called a venture capitalist. 
    I have invested thousands of dollars, as well as my time and advice, helping someone start a business.

    On the other hand, since I don't expect to ever get repaid (unless I take out a "business partner" life insurance policy), I probably don't meet the definition.
