By the time we become wiser to the set of knowledge we have grown up with they have changed it or have gone with other newer or more fashionable knowledge. This post was edited by officegirl at April 16, 2019 11:42 AM MDT

I remember reading a long time ago when I was much younger that "Even if one falls asleep at the opera, he will eventually be able to recognize the March of the Toreadors from Carmen."

I found that a more accurate description of the aging process is the phrase, "You can't fix stupid."  (And I submit Trump and his base as the primary argument for that reality.)

Seldom do people listen to what the oracle at Delphi suggested:  "Know thyself."

Becoming wiser takes both intent to do so and hard work to accomplish that goal.

You do realize tom that to "know thyself" is the hardest thing to accomplish and the greatest challenge we have right? Why? Because we are ALWAYS DISPOSED to see ourselves in the best possible light. To accord ourselves props for having good intentions even if and when we screw up badly. At least that is what I have observed. How often do you see anyone taking responsibility for his/her situation? They just don't. It is always others who caused it and others who control it and others who are preventing any resolution. Do you know yourself?  How do you know that? No disrespect intended but we homo saps are very good at fooling ourselves. Remember Walt Kelly? "We has met the enemy and they is us". Except we refuse to recognize that. Mostly. Thank you for your reply. I'm gonna ask a question about super smart folks. I had you in mind.  :) This post was edited by RosieG at April 16, 2019 1:59 PM MDT

Given my upbringing, my only hope for survival was to "know myself"---and a pursuit I have engaged in since my early twenties.  I am quite pleased with my self-knowledge.

As I have said before on here, I think truth exists and is the proper object of study.  I have spent a lot of time in libraries over the years studying psychology and reading case studies in the field.

It has been a truly worthwhile and satisfying pursuit.
