"Hysterical blindness". A condition in which there is no physical reason for a person to be "blind". Can it last a lifetime?

Something happens to someone. Maybe a sight too terrible to handle and so "blindness" sets in and they are convinced they cannot see. How does that work? Can the mind actually convince the eyes of that? That seems very weird and very scary.
