Can you remember a debate going awry because the debaters forgot to double check intent?

Some questions can be a little vague and cryptic, which can be very effective at provoking plenty of vigorous discussion. But sometimes they end up rolling off into personal accusations - some of which are so mistaken they're just plain incorrect.

Sometimes people play devil's advocate and present the question in such a way as to draw out the thinking of people they may disagree with - perhaps to better understand that thinking, or maybe just being slightly trolly, a little mischievous.

Sometimes we read things between the lines that are not there at all, assuming we know the questioner's mind when we don't.

What are some good questions to ask one another in order to clarify what the question is asking?
