We say "Love" but it can change over time. Ideally it changes for the better. Sometimes it doesn't. "Respect"? I think that is essential but you can respect someone you don't like much. Shared views? Trust? Laughter? Good memories? Helping one another? Some couples are definitely short-haul. Others stick and stay.
