Is it really the economy that drives them to cling tightly to him?. Many of them don't have jobs that he promised. Many saw their taxes GO UP. Many are living hand-to-mouth waiting for him to SAVE THEM. He has no intention of saving them. So at what point do they abandon him or do they go down and drown still believing in him as he makes sure all the lifesaving things they expected from him are moved out of their reach?
