It is logical that we would feel more intense about things happening to others that we experienced ourselves than those we haven't. Right?

But can't we also relate to those who suffer tragedies in their lives we haven't experienced and perhaps give some thought/care/concern to them? Some folks are so good at doing that they go into a profession where they can help such people. Others haven't the capacity or desire for it. At all. Zip. Zero. Zed. Zilch. Nada.

How does the capacity to relate develop?
