"This president uses foreign policy as a TRANSACTIONAL MATTER". What the he ** does that mean exactly?

If ya got transactional there must also be untransactional non-transactional anti-transactional.

It means he views ALL foreign policy as a business transaction.
Which means he expects a "quid pro quo" ... they give us something, we give them something.

Which, of course, is seldom how foreign policy works.
Usually, it's more along the lines of ... we like what you're doing, so we'll support you.
Or at least along the lines of ... we don't like what THEY are doing (more than we don't like what YOU are doing), and you oppose them, so we'll support you.

Thank you for your reply Walt. It is very helpful and informative. But then it seems to me not what he does at all. What has he gotten from Kim versus what he has given him? Or Putin? He is a slobbering giddy girlyman who swoons over despot dictators. He is massively obsequious and subordinates himself to them giving them compliments up one side and down the other. He is humiliating himself and our country by his bobbysox crushes.  I think I'm gonna ask. I cannot imagine what he thinks he is getting as he crawls on his belly each time he talks about any of them. SIGH.  I don't get why his supporters think he is doing  a great job. Oh well. Different strokes! :)

He's the first US President to meet with the leader of North Korea.
So what he gets is a huge ego boost.
It's like Nixon going to China, in the historic context.  Of course, Nixon had better "follow up" in that it wasn't just about him.
