    Well, I guess my father dis'd us all when he disappeared when I was 6, but I was unaware of such concepts when I was that age. My mother, as far as I remember, never disrespected me.

    No, I was not treated with respect---part of that was the milieu of that era, but that is still no excuse.  I will admit that they probably did not know the harm that can cause.

    I treat all children with respect---including mine and those of others.  But respect in its original meaning does not automatically mean that I admire or esteem everything they are doing. It means that my job is to allow them space to grow according to whatever congenital "tropism" they come with and raise them to be fully functioning adults.

    Why?---because that last sentence in the paragraph above is the right of every child.
