Per Bernie Sanders insulin is available in Canada for 1/10 of the price charged in the United States. Due to why?

Drug companies have no limits to what they can charge. They OWN Congress and their lobbyists pay much money to "convince" the pols to let them have their way with prices. So screw us and enrich them..them being the drug companies and the sleazy pols who can be bought on the cheap .

Isn't that a swell thing to know?

Because our gov is involved in paying for prescriptions. And when the gov gets involved prices go up.
The gov was never allowed to use their buying power to negotiate prices. (There maybe a bill working on that now...not sure if it was passed)
Our system also makes it hard to comparison shop for meds so it is harder for free market competition to help regulate prices. Allowing Canada purchases should force prices down in the USA as well.

Countries that have universal health care also pay for prescriptions, so they negotiate with pharmaceutical companies to get the best price.  The U.S. government, with the exception of the Veterans Administration, is expressly prohibited from negotiating prices with pharma companies - I'm not sure why.  Prescription costs through the VA are very low.

There are Canadian pharmacies that will fill U.S. prescriptions and charge lower prices and it can all be done by mail.  I know for a fact that the prescription Eliquis is close to $400 a month without insurance here in the U.S.  Ordered from Canada, it's $365.00 for a three month supply and that includes shipping.

That is what I said...our gov involved so they jack the price up. Ins and Medicare pay less but it is still based on a percentage of the regular retail price.
There was talk of a bill to allow gov to negotiate for Medicare/Medicaid but I do not know the status of that.

The gov has been involved in prescriptions for Medicare and medicaid for decades.  It's only been in the past few years that medications have skyrocketed.  Why do you think that is?  Why should insulin, which used to be around $40 skyrocket 400%?  It isn't a new drug, but it is a life-saving drug, so Big Pharma figures people will have to pay the price or die.

Lobbyists.  What else?  Follow the money.  Who stands to gain?  It's obvious who does.  Those premiums we pay also go into the pockets of the morons who are trying to keep the prices up.  Very simply put.

I'm not going to even try and explain it.  We took down the tobacco industry to a degree because people just stopped smoking.  (most people have quit, there are enough smokers still, so to keep going, prices are 20 times higher than they were when I was growing up.)  That is a big escalation even for the amount of time passed since then.

But.  HOW DO WE STOP TAKING MEDS?  We cannot just quit meds.  That is the big problem.   The American people cannot just answer and quit the product they need.  This is not overcoming an addiction, this is life or death. Hmmmm ... The Trump Administration wanted to force drug manufacturers to be "transparent" and show drug prices on commercials.
That was supposed to start this summer.
But a federal judge prevented it.

"US District Judge Amit Mehta of the District of Columbia vacated Monday the Department of Health and Human Services' rule that would have required drug makers to include their list prices in TV ads, saying the agency had overstepped its authority."

I wonder if it would be "overstepping authority" if the rule came from the FCC?
