The banning of books and the banning of guns are dissimilar bigly. How so?

When you ban books you ban information opinion ideas facts from being shared, passed on, disseminated.

When you ban guns the purpose of which is to kill you lower the number of people killed. Theoretically.

Banning ideas versus banning death. How do you reconcile the two so that they are of equal value? Can you?

It's seen often throughout history ... when a government denies the citizenry the ability to resist by force, the government also denies the citizenry the ability to access knowledge.

I think we are simply approaching this issue from two different angles Walt. Let me give you an example and see if it fits YOU.

A very dear friend of mine of many years is adamantly opposed to government doing things which don't bother me. FOR INSTANCE. I don't mind being stopped at checkpoints to make sure I"m sober while driving. Sometimes they do that especially on New Year's Eve. Also wiretapping. While I wouldn't be exctatic about having my phone tapped I wouldn't get hysterical about it. I'm not doing or saying anything that would get me in trouble. My friend is a very good guy. Doesn't go rogue and break any laws because he doesn't agree with them. But  he gets incensed about individual rights be tampered with and it doesn't bother me. If I were doing something wrong it would I expect but it's not an issue for me. I have other fish to fry. I expect it would bother you bigly. Now if I were arrested for something I didn't do sure I'd be terrified and angry and try to fight it. But if I'm just being observed to insure national security  or public safety with my ability to do/say what I want unhampered I'm not gonna get all ACLU and sue. Could that be our differences? Thank you for your reply! :) This post was edited by RosieG at September 5, 2019 3:02 AM MDT
