Discussion»Statements»Rosie's Corner» How many indoor plants do you have? How many pets? Do you LOVE being responsible for the survival of living things or do you avoid it?
Pets - 2 cats and 1 dog. Plants - 22 avocado trees (ranging from 8'-22' in height - all in pots), 3 very large pineapple plants (the smallest came from the fruit of the biggest one), 18 spider plants (green and variegated), 12 cacti (one of which is nearly 100 years old), 3 begonias, 2 very old geraniums, 2 large sword ferns, 1 asparagus fern, 1 Philodendron, 1 Ficus tree (9' tall), one Ti plant (5' tall),and one large, lopsided aloe vera plant.
I consider it a privilege to be given the responsibility for caring for all these. Yes, hairballs are annoying (especially when I step in one at 3am). Yes, hauling a ton of plants (literal weight) outside in the spring and then back in in the fall is back breaking. Yes, taking a sick dog to the vet is expensive. BUT... hearing the content purr of a warm kitty sleeping next to me at night is priceless. To sit amid a forest of houseplants on my patio each summer is reassuringly peaceful. To be greeted by a wagging tail and a slobbery mouth carrying a stuffed hedgehog each time I come home is sheer joy. Yes, I love being responsible for their survival. it far outweighs all the money in the world.
My Jim would LOVE to be your best friend Shuhak! 22 Avocado trees? Oh my goodness! And pineapple? Of course I would focus on the food you grow. As far as your pets. Well we lost our darling Tigger several years ago. A stray who adopted us and of course became part of our family When we had to put him down our hearts broke and will never be mended. We did not get another pet. We're old and who would care for it? So we yearn for something to love. Did I tell you we chat with the skinks in our backyard? I'm serious. They don't chat back but they are not afraid of us. They know they're safe. We keep our distance and try not to disturb them. There is one who hides in a large crack who will come out and just watch Jim trim the bushes. I guess at some level it could be viewed as pathetic but we'll take it. Thank you for your thoughtful reply m'dear! You just scored many bigly points with me though of course you didn't intend to do so. SIGH.
