Can focusing on one tree help you to understand a forest in its entirety? Or a thread in a tapestry show you "the big picture"?

Do you get sidetracked/distracted by the tiny so that you never notice the big? Do you prefer the edges rather than the center? The toenail rather than the heart?

Some get involved in tertiary irrelevant bits and pieces and never get around to the heart of the matter or the point or the issue. Why is that?
