Depends on how much it costs. If it was inexpensive ... I'll generally ask if someone I know wants it. If not, I'll try to sell it at a garage sale. If it was expensive ... I'll return it to the store.
Here's my true confession Walt. I'm embarrassed about it. I NEVER BOTHERED RETURNING ANYTHING until I met Jim. He taught me to KEEP ALL RECEIPTS until I tried it out. Now how sensible is that? I never did that before. Now it's automatic. I ALWAYS keep the receipt until I try it out and like it. That is true of food too like maybe we got a lousy watermelon for $5 and couldn't eat it. I keep it and return it the next day and show them the receipt and the lousy watermelon and no one has ever refused to give us our money back. For your eyes only m'dear. I didn't return anything because I was too dam* LAZY and couldn't be bothered! Sheesh. Thank you for your reply and Happy First Day of Autumn 2019 Monday! :)
Most of my dissatisfaction has been all my fault, but poor choice!
I think I've only ever had to complain twice about something being faulty.
The first was a tub of rice dessert that was mouldy, on the day I bought it - I examined the pot and found a tiny hole in the foil lid. I washed the lid, with its production details, and sent it with a nice polite letter to the manufacturers, who thanked me and sent a refund more than the actual value.
The second was not due to a manufacturing or packing fault, or a failure by the shop. I bought a small wall-lamp, and at home discovered a small bracket mentioned in the instructions, was missing. I examined the box closely, and realised it had been opened by some dim-wit customer who'd dropped the bracket and was too idle to find and replace it when re-packing the lamp and putting it back on the shelf. The shop assistant was sympathetic, and said the staff have to spend an hour after closing time, re-packing and re-stacking items left in a jumble or on the wrong shelves by ill-behaved customers. I found the missing bracket, so re-united it with the lamp I'd bought!
Why didn't you return the tub of rice to the store where you purchased it and get an instant refund Durdle? It was great that the manufacturer gave you a refund plus. Very classy customer relations. And it's great that you found the missing bracket! That was a more than a little bit of luck! I'd say your track record is exceptional. Every year we return things that are not usable or edible. Thank you for your thoughtful reply! :)
Returning it directly was not practicable as I'd bought it somewhere a long way from home, and opened it in a lunch break on my journey home.
I was lucky to have found the missing bracket. The displays used where I bought the lamp are large wire baskets, and I guessed the missing part would be on the floor below them, but of course could have been swept up by the cleaners, and no-one would have known its purpose. Yes, it was there, along with various small parts of other goods that had been opened and thrown back.
You're welcome Durdle. You may have a bit of Irish in you because I'd say you are blessed with at least a bit of Irish luck. Coupled with the ability to figure things out! Not a bad combination! Thank you for your reply m'dear! :)
