How do we know FOR CERTAIN that what Historians record as having happened actually happened the way they describe?

We live in the present day and in school we learn about what happened many decades/centuries before. You can not possibly retroactively monitor any of it. You take it on faith that they were  TRUTHFUL and did not have any ax to grind or lies to promulgate or evil partisan propaganda to put out there. The more you learn the less you can be sure that you know anything. Which is not the way it is supposed to be.
