I saw a documentary last night that laid it all out to perfection.
It seems that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had a mentor who used DEDUCTIVE REASONING as a tool to conclude things. Sir Art wondered how the use of that would be if a detective used it as an aid to solve crimes?
Before its appearance people either confessed (were beaten until they did) OR there were eyewitnesses(who may or may not have been telling the truth). There was no evidence collection, no preserving a crime scene, no looking for every little detail to figure anything out. Crime scenes were contaminated and destroyed. Nothing was preserved.
But Holmes was a master at deducing. Before he came to any conclusions he searched for all the evidence and examined it thoroughly. Piece by piece. After which he began to put it all together to form the template by which he then solved the case.
I expect many of you knew that. I didn't. If it were not for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle having a mentor who showed him how to use deductive logic I wonder what Scotland Yard (the world's premiere forensic evidence purveyors) would be like or if there would be any such entity?
