Isn't it a putdown of himself? It is unexpected and that often makes things funny. But this? Funny? I dunno. Whatcha think? I think not joining a club because it is restrictive takes an important stand. Admirable. But not joining a club that wants you or resigning from one of which you are member and putting yourself down? I don't get what's humorous about that. Do you?
