    No ... it was the result of superstition, jealousy, and not fitting in with the societal norms.

    No.  There were mass outbreaks of witch hysteria that have occurred throughout the world that may have been contributed to ergot, but Salem was a simple matter of ignorance and good, old-fashioned hatred & bigotry fueled by poor "Christian" values under the governance of oppressive , puritanical leadership.
