    Repayment is appropriate, but I would argue that turning it into a lifetime annuity for the one to whom you feel that obligation taints one's ability to be objective when the need for judging that individual's actions arises.

    Here is what you are missing tom. If such person continues on watching your back and being there for you why would you not do the same for him/her? It isn't a one-time thing that once repaid ends. I'm not sure you fully understand what I mean to say and that may well be my inability to communicate in terms that make sense to you.
