I think we have a long and well-established history of worrying about "the enemy within". The Salem Witch Hunts. Whisky Rebellion. The Civil War. Concentration Camps during WW2. McCarthyism and "The Red Scare". Immigrants (every generation, it seems). Media bias (brought more to the forefront since the 1980s).
The Republicans and Democrats have always played off each other as "the enemy" of their own supporters. It's just that most people didn't see it, until the last decade or so.
Lincoln overthrew the Constitutional government of the United States when he went to war to preserve a non-existent Union of States, over the Constitutional voluntary association of Sovereign States. NOTHING in the Constitution forbids a state from leaving - therefore, under the 10th Amendment, it was Constitutional for the states to secede.
As I said, it's my personal opinion. Lincoln was also responsible for throwing people in jail for disagreeing with him, and literally destroying their businesses. Lincoln was also responsible for the deaths of 620,000 American soldiers - nearly the same as died in ALL other wars. Not to mention the number of Americans who died due to starvation and other war-related causes. Not to mention the decades of people suffering under "Reconstruction".
