"We failed to disinfect surgical tools". Per Goshen Hospital in North Indiana. Bottom line?

Nearly 1200 surgical patients may have been exposed to HIV, Hepatitis and other diseases.

A class action lawsuit waiting to happen? How long does it take to manifest itself after exposure? Very quickly or after a long period of incubation? Ever have something like that happen to you?

Since when does HIV live on tools?  It has to be kept alive through bodily fluids.  What did the hospital do?  Did they operate on a person and make sure the tool has blood on it that is still viable?  And pass it to the next operating room and next doctor?  That's kind of hard to do.  But I guess that is how drug addicts who share needles get infected.

Who ever wants to go to a hospital after hearing things like this?

Now I'm slightly curious how they disinfect surgical tools.
I always pictured something like an industrial dishwasher, that they run the tools through.
There must be something they do after the tools look clean?
Did they just forget to put the tools in the Autoclave for steam sterilization, after washing them?
I mean, I would expect at least ONE person in the operating room to mention if the tool didn't look clean.

Beats me Walt. I cannot imagine "forgetting" or "neglecting" to do that in any Hospital in any area. It just seems to me to me an AUTOMATIC thing. Don't they have checklists? I mean like pilots have checklists of things they have to do before they take off. I'm gonna ask. Thank you for your reply and Happy Saturday! :)

Some hospitals throw the tools away in the biohazard bin and use new ones for each surgery. "May have been exposed." Did anyone contract any of those diseases? How would the patients know? How do you sue a 'may have' situation? Hey...that guy speeding past me may have hit me. I'm going to sue him.

I don't know the answer to your question E. I think they just notified people to give them a heads up to be examined. I mean if you are on a flight with someone who has a communicable disease don't the airlines inform you so you can get tested for it? Also not everyone is going to get "it". I think notification is essential. What you do with that info is up to you. Same thing exactly with car recalls. They notify millions of folks that their car "may" have a defective part. Not all the cars will. Thank you for your reply! :) This post was edited by RosieG at November 23, 2019 4:31 AM MST

Exactly...where do these news stories come from? How does a woman get cervical cancer from baby powder? Do lawyers make this stuff up?

Beats the he** outta me. I never used baby powder on my body but I did on my son to powder his bottom all the time so he wouldn't get diaper rash. I just wonder what that baby powder did to all those babies? Not to be indelicate but well you know I say what I think. Do women put talcum powder in the vaginas? I mean really how could they get cervical cancer otherwise? Here's what I think happens. People are always looking for reasons why a thing happens. Similarities..connections. Maybe women with cervical cancer had in common using Johnson's baby powder "down there". Why else would it come up? I'm sure the ambulance-chasing dimwith lawyers do make stuff up. Those "pretend" accidents where some a**hole wears a neck brace he doesn't need to collect money for an accident that never injured him. But this specific thing? I think there is something. What I don't know. Thank you for your reply! :)
