I had zero idea I was so abjectly IGNORANT about the uses of oil (petroleum..refined crude oil). Whose bright idea was THAT?

An Answermug friend informs me that petroleum (refined crude oil) is used in a bazillion products.

From head to toe toiletries and clothing and anything everything and more INCLUDES some form of petroleum.

Are you telling me those products could not exist without it?

Deoderants and perfumes and shoes and you name it INCLUDES petroleum? What nitwit decides to include petroleum in all those products? What does PETROLEUM do that nothing else can do?

Without its existence would we be wearing animals skins? For crying out loud how does that make any sense at all? Yet there you have it.
What a racket.

It was not stupid, though more thought should be given to what will happen when the world's petroleum and coal reserves run out.

Those materials based on petroleum-derivatives came about because although often now used misguidedly or wastefully, they do provide genuinely practical alternatives to their predecessors; and in many cases allow developments hitherto extremely difficult or even impossible.

Prior to these materials becoming available everything had to be metal, ceramic or glass, or of modern animal and vegetable origin; and those directly-organic materials have serious limits.

I can tell you one thing we'd not be able to do without some of those materials made from petroleum derivatives - discuss it like this!
