Wow, this reminds me of a time on another forum where another user with political beliefs similar to yours asserted "Studies say X is so"
I did a little digging, and what I found was that a single study had drawn the conclusion X is so (among similar studies with varying conclusions), but because multiple reporters/commentators on right-leaning media web sites had all linked the story to each other, it created the ILLUSION that "studies say X"
Similarly, if 19 news organizations all attend the same press conference where a Chinese government official says "No soup for you" "No trade deal unless the US ends its tariffs", that does not constitute a collective "they" say it can't be done. No, "they" are reporting China says it can't be done.
"They" have no influence over whether the deal can or cannot be done.
As for the significance of the "Phase 1 trade deal", it's not quite as trivial as Reagan's joke about banning the Soviet Union and bombing in 5 minute, but it's not much more significant.
According to reports, the goal of the deal is for China to go back to importing US agricultural products at about the same level as before Trump started this stupid trade war. In other words, if Trump had NOT started the tariff war, we'd be in the same position today as we (nominally) will be once the Phase 1 deal is implemented...except US taxpayers will be collectively $40 billion poorer from the bailout subsidies we paid for.
Also, there are apparently no enforcement mechanisms in the deal. China is promising to go back to buying US agricultural products as it did before, but if it doesn't there are no definite consequences to breaking that promise.
Yeah, that Trump is a real genius...
